Ask ten competitive FPS players which aiming style is superior and you'll probably get eleven different answers. The flick vs. tracking debate has been a fixture in every Discord server, subreddit, and post-match lobby since Counter-Strike was running on dial-up. But when you zoom out and look at what's actually happening at the pro level—in Valorant, CS2, and Overwatch 2—the conversation gets a whole lot more interesting than "just flick faster, bro."

The truth is, the best players in the world aren't religious about either technique. They're situational. And understanding why is the key to unlocking a more complete mechanical game.

What We Actually Mean By Flicking and Tracking

Before we get into the weeds, let's define the terms properly, because a lot of players use them loosely.

Flick aiming is the explosive, near-instantaneous movement of your crosshair from one position to a target. It's the snap. The reflex. The kind of shot that makes highlight reels. The premise is that you're starting off-target and correcting in a single, fast motion.

Tracking is the continuous adjustment of your crosshair to match a moving target over time. It's smoother, more sustained, and relies heavily on reading enemy movement patterns. Think of it like keeping your sights glued to someone's head as they strafe.

Both require precision. Both require practice. But they pull from different physical and cognitive systems—and different games reward them very differently.

The CS2 Case: Why Flicks Dominate a Slow Game

Counter-Strike 2 is fundamentally a game about positioning and angles. Most gunfights happen at defined choke points, and the player who holds the angle almost always has the advantage. Because of this, a huge portion of CS2 gunfights are essentially reflex duels—you know roughly where the enemy is coming from, you wait, and then you react.

That's flick territory. And the pros know it.

Players competing at the ESL and BLAST circuit level spend enormous amounts of time in aim trainers like Aimlabs and KovaaK's running scenarios that specifically build explosive reaction accuracy. The idea is to build what coaches call "crosshair placement discipline"—getting your aim close to where the enemy will be before the fight starts, so the flick required is minimal.

"The flick isn't the whole story," one CS2 analyst who works with a North American academy team explained. "The pre-aim is 70 percent of the work. The flick just closes the gap. Guys who rely on massive flicks are usually getting caught out of position."

So in CS2, flicking is real—but it's supported by a framework of smart positioning that limits how far your crosshair actually has to travel.

Valorant's Hybrid Reality

Valorant is where the debate gets messier. Abilities create chaos. Smokes, flashes, and mobility tools mean that enemies don't always appear where you expect them. Jett dashing across your screen demands something your crosshair placement can't always anticipate.

Top Valorant players—especially those who've competed in VCT—tend to develop what you might call a hybrid muscle memory. They track moving targets through open space, then snap to a stationary or newly appeared target when needed. It's not one or the other. It's a constant read-and-respond loop.

"Valorant punishes you if you're too committed to one style," said a former collegiate Valorant player now coaching at a regional level. "You'll get a Reyna who just teleported onto your screen and your tracking instinct is useless. But if you're only flicking, you'll lose duels against players who strafe-peek you smoothly."

This is why Valorant aim training has trended toward blended scenario packs—alternating between static target flicking and dynamic tracking within the same session.

Overwatch 2: Where Tracking Becomes King (For Some Roles)

If CS2 leans flick and Valorant splits the difference, Overwatch 2 sits firmly in tracking territory—at least for certain heroes.

Hitscan DPS like Soldier: 76 and Sojourn require players to maintain consistent accuracy on heroes who are constantly moving, jumping, and using movement abilities. Smooth, sustained tracking is far more rewarded here than explosive snapping. The targets are often larger, the engagements longer, and the pace more forgiving of small corrections.

That said, heroes like Widowmaker and Hanzo pull the game back into flick territory. A Widow main playing at the Overwatch League level is essentially a CS2 AWPer—crosshair placement, patience, and a precise snap when the moment arrives.

Role identity in Overwatch 2 essentially dictates your training priority. Tanks and supports with aim requirements generally benefit from tracking fundamentals. Hitscan DPS split the difference. Snipers flick.

How Top Teams Are Training Both—At the Same Time

Here's where the meta-level stuff gets genuinely useful for anyone trying to level up their own practice.

Several NA esports organizations with dedicated performance coaches have moved away from siloed aim training—"today is flick day, tomorrow is tracking day"—toward integrated sessions that force players to switch between modes dynamically.

The logic is simple: real matches don't let you choose your scenario. A Valorant round might open with a tracking duel through a smoke and close with a flick on an entry fragger. Your nervous system needs to be comfortable with both transitions.

One popular method involves what coaches call "contrast sets"—alternating between a high-speed flick scenario for two minutes, then immediately switching to a smooth tracking scenario for two minutes, and repeating. The rapid context-switching builds what sports scientists call motor adaptability, essentially training your aim system to shift gears without hesitation.

Aimlabs has built scenario playlists specifically around this concept, and a growing number of US-based FPS coaches are incorporating them into structured practice blocks.

So Which Style Should You Prioritize?

Honestly? Start with your game, then your role, then your body mechanics.

If you're grinding CS2 and playing a rifler role, your foundation should be crosshair placement and tight flicking. If you're a Tracer main in Overwatch 2, you need tracking and the ability to maintain it under pressure. If you're climbing Valorant ranked, you probably need to be honest with yourself about which skill is the bigger weakness and attack it directly.

But at some point—and most high-level players agree on this—you need to stop thinking of them as competing philosophies and start treating them as two tools in the same kit. The players who plateau are often the ones who found one style that felt natural and stopped there.

The ones who break through? They put in the uncomfortable hours on the thing that doesn't come easy.

That's kind of the whole deal with competitive FPS. Comfort is where ceilings live.
